Equipotential Bonding: Grounding Clips, Anodizing Penetration & Lightning Protection

Ensuring low-resistance electrical continuity across anodized aluminum rails, clamps, and solar module frames for lightning and fault current safety.

Lead Author: Celalettin YAGMAHAN (Civil Engineer & Structural Lead)

Key Engineering Takeaways

  • โœ“ Grounding clips eliminate separate copper jumper wires between adjacent panels
  • โœ“ Path electrical resistance must stay below 0.1 ohms per UL 2703 / IEC 62548
  • โœ“ Complete array becomes a continuous equipotential grid grounded to main earth bars

The Anodized Layer as an Electrical Insulator

Anodized aluminum oxide (Al2O3) is an exceptional electrical dielectric insulator. Standard clamps placed onto anodized frames will NOT establish electrical continuity unless a specialized grounding mechanism is employed.

Grounding Clips with Mechanical Piercing Teeth

SolarAlu grounding clips (bonding washers) are stamped from hardened 304/316 stainless steel with sharp micro-teeth. When the M8 clamp bolt is tightened to 15 Nm, these teeth bite through the anodized layer into the raw aluminum substrate, creating a gas-tight electrical bond with path resistance under 0.1 ohms.

TECHNICAL QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Technical Questions

How many grounding clips are needed per module?
Typically one grounding clip is installed at every mid clamp location between two adjacent modules.
Can we attach copper earth lugs directly to aluminum rails?
Only with tin-plated bimetallic lugs or stainless separator washers to prevent galvanic corrosion.
